Choosing Guardians for your Children

Courtesy of the Northwest Indiana Times:

Choosing a guardian for your children is an important decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Every parent hopes to live to see their children lead successful lives, but it’s important to be prepared for the unexpected.

There are a few things you should take into consideration before choosing a guardian. Your choice should be close with your children, possess parenting skills and have the financial capability of taking care of your children. Also take into consideration whether your guardian choice is married and whether you want to include his or her spouse as a guardian as well.

Talk to your prospective guardians before designating them in your will or other document. In Louisiana, you can name guardians in your will or in a stand-alone document.

Naming a guardian is a difficult decision, but remember: if you change your mind, you can update your will or other designation document.
